Description

Photograph of tourists on the beach at Santa Catalina Island's Isthmus, [s.d.]. The clear water washes onto the sand from the right while people look on from the shade of the palm trees at center. A wooden building stands on the far left while several others occupy the rest of the island towards the right. Small boats sit along the beach at the water's edge. Mountains stand in the across the background. Photoprint reads: "Except that there are no outrigger canoes one might believe that the view above was from one of the many islands in the South Seas. However, it is at the isthmus on Catalina Island."

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
