Description
Photograph of a lithograph of a drawing of a LaFayette Hotel with a fort in the background, 1857-1870. The building with the covered porch in the middle is the "LaFayette Hotel & Restaurant". Two horses, one of which has a rider, are depicted in the street as well as five pedestrians. A taller building can be seen directly behind the hotel, while a hill is depicted in the background at right.; During the 1870's the Lafayette Hotel was considered the best hotel in Los Angeles. It was located on Main Street near Temple Street (later the site of the Federal Building). The building on the hill behind the hotel was built as a jail and later used as a dwelling. (Fred Eaton was born in this dwelling.) The two-story building directly behind the hotel (north) was the first Masonic Lodge, organized as number 42 in 1854. The Odd Fellows Lodge also met there.
