Description

Photograph of motorship Tokai Maru in Los Angeles Harbor, September 1930. At center, the large ship can be seen sitting in the open water of the harbor. A long, light-colored stripe outlines the upper rim of the ship's body. Near the bow of the ship alongside two anchors, the words "Tokai Maru" can be seen below three Japanese characters. A central mast supporting at least three flags can be seen at the center of the ship. Also near the ship's center, two large poles are connected by an arched support. Several people can be seen on the deck near the bow. In the extreme background, the harbor is visible.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
