Description
Photograph of earthquake refugees at the US Mint Building in San Francisco, 1906. The Federal-style building of the Mint is pictured at center from the left foreground to the right background. Along the sidewalk in front of it, pedestrians examine possesions that have been left outside the Mint, underneath tarp and sheets of corrugated metal. An American flag hangs from the front of the building, while cobblestone streets fill the foreground.; The Mint became a refugee village because Superintendent Frank Leach installed two pipes from the Mint's artesian well after the earthquake to provide fresh water to the homeless.
