Description
Photograph of molten lava joining sea near Hoopuloa village after eruption of Mauna Loa, Hawaii, April 1926. In the extreme background, rivers of lava are visible moving down a hillside. A large portion of the lava can be seen spilling into the large open body of water to the right. Large, thick plumes of smoke can be seen rising from the water's edge. In the extreme foreground, a large group of people can be seen watching the event. A man near the front of the crowd on the right sets up a camera on a tripod to capture the event. To the right of the crowd, a small cylindrical structure with a pointed roof is visible. To the far left, a rectangular stone wall can be seen beside tall pall trees. Caption at the bottom of the image reads: "River of molten lava as it joins the sea at the Hawaii village of Hoopuloa, Hawaii at 6:21AM". Photo sleeve reports: "Copied June 1926".
