Description
Photograph of the Church of Saint Thomas in Yuma, Arizona on the site of Fort Yuma, ca.1912. To the right the main building of the church is visible. Its two tiers, the first of which is a covered walkway leading to the church entrance, are topped by unadorned crosses. The main window, a slatted porthole above the entrance, is bordered by a design that terminates in a topping cross. Beside the main building a small bell tower with a tapering design and terminal dome is also topped by a cross. To the left of this is a statue of Padre Garces, who gave the name to the Colorado River and was killed by the Yuma Indians on July 17th, 1786. The statue is of a central figure holding a staff topped by a cross. At his feet are what appear to be a Native American to his left and a child to his right. For portait of Padre Garces, see USC-1-1-1-13821.
