Description
Photograph of the intersection of Spring Street and First Street looking south, ca.1900-1904. The Hotel Nadeau (erected 1885) is visible at right (later the site of the Times Building). Most of the buildings appear to be commercial and average four-stories high. The busy street is crowded with streetcars, horse-drawn vehicles, and pedestrians. A banner stretched across the street in the distance reads "Labor Day Celebration".; Other legible signs include: "Union Ice Co., [...] Alameda St.", "1877", "Kennedy, dentist", "Nadeau[?] Castle", "Oil, Copper and Finance, weekly", "W.F. Hall, importer[...]", "110, billiard parlor[...]s[...]ing parlors, 106", "Bolivar cigars", "[...]s pipes", "Eureka Dental", "Western Union Telegraph and Cable Office", "Dentist", "[...]office", ..."cian, [...]low", "Dr. Knepper, dentist", "The Royal", "Smith & Ennis, clothiers[...]", "Luckenbach & Co. Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
