Photograph of an exterior view of the Hughes Hotel in Fresno, ca.1890. A gigantic, Victorian-style block building can be seen occupying the entire section between two cross streets, its tallest peak visible at the corner right of center. Below, commercial interests advertise via sign, including a drug store and grain dealer.; Legible signs from left to right read: "F.M. Miller, Grain dealer", "Smith's Dandruff Pomade cures dandruff, eczema and itching scalp. Price 50 cents", "Smith Bros' Catarrn Cure. Ear, Throat, Stomach, Bowels and Bladder", "Chemists. Druggists", "Take Smith Bros. Ague Cure. Chills and Fever Guaranteed", "Use Universal Salve. Boyles, burns, cuts and wounds", "King Pain cures all aches and pains. Try it", and "Bath".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
