Description
Photograph of close-up of hull of a ship against a dock, Los Angeles Harbor, November 1934. In the extreme foreground at center, a wooden dock can be seen extending from left to right. Beside the dock at right, the hull and rudder of a large ship is visible. Small portholes are visible along the side of the ship. Along the top of the ship, a long metal railing is visible. Two ropes connect to the ship and extend off to the left. Two men are visible on the deck of the ship. A small sign along the railing reads: "Keep Clear of Propellers". Writing along the body of the ship reads: "[...]merville". In the background across the water, a series of large ships can be seen. To the right, a sign on a building reads: "Catalina". A large plume of smoke rises from the horizon. Previous version of record quotes from unknown source: "Harbor, 221-B, 158".

The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
