Description
Photograph of several steamships at a wharf, ca.1920. To the left, a large steamship is visible anchored next to a wharf. Two main masts can be seen rising from the deck of the steamship, and a smokestack is visible at its center. Several wires and ladders can be seen running from the masts of the ship to the large deck below. To the left of the ship, a large crane arm can be seen lowering an object onto the deck of the ship. To the far right, several more steamships can be seen extending far into the background of the image. Between the lines of steamships, several small, covered boats line the harbor of the wharf. In the foreground to the left, wooden poles in the water can be seen adjacent to a wooden pier with a small sign at its edge. In the extreme background, the coastline of a city is vaguely seen.

Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960
Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
