Description
Photograph of a Viking ship that was removed from clay in which it was embedded at Gokstad, Norway, ca.1900. It stands in a large wooden hangar at the Museum of Archaeology, University of Christiania, Oslo, Norway. It was discovered in 1880. It sailed between the 8th and 10th centuries. As was customary, it served as the tomb of its owner, whose remains were discovered in a specially constructed chamber near the center. The entire vessel was encased in four feet of potters clay. Note the aft outboard rudder on the starboard side of the hull.
