Description
Photograph of a single steamship at a wharf, showing several boats in the water, ca.1920. To the left, a large steamship is seen anchored in a harbor next to a wharf. Two large masts are visible along the main deck of the steamship. Several additional poles can be seen extending from each main mast in a fanned array. Various wires and ladders connect the masts to the deck below. A small smokestack is also visible at the ship's center. Near the bow of the ship, a large crane is visible lowering an object onto the deck. Another crane is also seen near the stern. In the background, a long row of crane stations are visible along the edge of the wharf. In the extreme background to the right, a long building can be seen near the water's edge. Alongside the ship, several small boats sit in the calm water. A few men are seen within these boats. In the extreme foreground, several additional boats are visible sitting at the edge of the water near the wharf.

Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
