Description

Photograph of two men in police costumes measuring a woman in a bathing suit, Venice Beach, ca.1920. The woman stands at center in a dark bathing suit with lightly-colored straps on her shoulders and her right hand at her hip. Her lightly, curly hair is pinned back and her face has shadows on the right from the sun which shines down from the left. The men are dressed in long, dark police jackets and hats with star-shaped badges on their chests and facial hair drawn on their faces. They kneel in the sand as the one on the left measures her waist and the one on the right takes her height. A lightly-colored building with an arched roof stands behind them in the background.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
