Description
Photograph of airliner, showing two women posing in the foreground, ca.1940. In the far background at center, a large commercial airliner is visible. To the left, alphanumeric characters are seen on the tail of the plane. To the right of the tail, the word "American" is slightly visible along with a symbol obscured by vegetation. A man is also seen hunched near one of the windows of the plane near the engine. In the foreground, two women wearing boots and cowboy hats are visible. Both also wear scarves and long-sleeved jackets. To the left of the women, cacti and various vegetation is seen surrounded by a circle of rocks. In the extreme foreground to the right , leaves from a tree obscure the photo.

Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960
Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
