Description

Photograph of a view of the the Central Airport looking west-north-west, ca.1927. At the center, several planes sit in a line with their tails to the runway. To the right sit several rows of planes in what appears to be a plane parking area of sorts. Left of these are two larger aircrafts by several roofed structures. In the distance beyond the airport are several large fields, followed by what appears to be a residential area. At the upper right corner sit several rounded structures across an area thick with trees. More residential areas appear on the flat plane, stretching out beyond the border of the picture. The street at the far end of the runway is Central Avenue. Rosecrans Avenue is about a quarter-mile south of the runway.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
