Description

Photograph of an unidentified dam, ca.1930. Weeds and tall grass hide the jagged rocks that litter the dusty bank in the foreground of the smooth river which flows behind it. A similar bank edges the water on the right while no plants speckle the dusty hills on the left. A small tower which resembles the tip of a castle emerges from the water at center with tree-covered hills near the dam behind it on the left. The water appears to wind around the dark hills out of sight on the right.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
