Description
Photograph of a drawing by Edward Vischer depicting Mexican vaqueros in the ruins of Mission San Margarita, ca.1864. At center, a vaquero tends his horse, which dwarfs him, while two others situate themselves in the ruins to the right, preparing for a rodeo. Fallen support beams and piled debris fill the court made by the adobe mission buildings. Text written-in below the image identifies the site. More text is written as part of the image.; The in-image text reads: "Casa de St. Margarita Description. It was divided into store-rooms for different kinds of grains and apartments for the accommodation of the majordomo servants and wayfarers. At one end there was the chapel and [...] lodging rooms for the priest, who needed to stay here during harvest time and the holy priests [...] the friars [...] missions (San Miguesl and San Luis Obispo) occasionally met there, to acknowledge each other their sins.", and "Alfred Robinson's 'Life in California', page 82".
