Photograph of United Airlines commercial airliner, showing crowd in foreground, ca.1940. At center, a large airliner is shown stationary in a large, open cement lot. Near the tail of the plane, a small shield emblem is visible with the words "United Airlines". A small staircase is positioned next to this emblem connecting to the door of the plane. On the right wing, a series of dark alphanumeric characters is seen. In the foreground, a crowd of people stand near a fence separating them from the cement lot. To the right, a small lightly-colored shuttle with several windows is visible. In the extreme background, large mountains can be seen framed against a cloudy sky.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
