Description

Photograph of a composite (?) image of a small commercial airliner flying at night over a city, ca.1935. Near the top at center, a small airliner can be seen flying against a black sky. A small circular propeller is visible at the front of the plane, and two other propellers are seen on either side of the craft. The small cylindrical body of the plane is framed by two large, extending wings. A small light is seen on each wing. The tires of the plane are connected to the wings and body by a series of metallic rods. Below the plane, a large lit city is seen extending into the horizon.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
