Description
Photograph of a man making observations at the Smithsonian Institute Observatory, ca.1920-1930. In the center of the picture, a man is visible on a tiled patio making observations using an apparatus that determines the constancy of solar radiation and the effect of sun spots upon weather conditions on Earth. The man wears a lightly colored visor as he calibrates the astrological equipment. In the background, trees cover a mountain.; Photoprint reads: "Making observations at the Smithsonian Institution Observatory. This is one observatory where telescopes are not used in the work. The object is the determination of the constancy of solar radiation and the effect of the sun spots upon the weather conditions on the Earth. Mr. A.F. Moor is in charge of this station. There are three such stations conducted by the Smithsonian Institution. One in a desolate desert of South Africa -- and the other in a bleak desert in Chili. The observatory is located on Table Mountain immediately adjacent to Big Pines Recreation Camp".

Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
