Description

Photograph of construction of Boulder Dam, showing construction on the top of the dam, ca.1930. A thick, metal frame stands on support platforms on the canyon wall to the left of the dam. A row of tires stands just behind the frame while large rings lean against the rock wall behind them with metal towers standing above. The lightly-colored dam stands on the right with a "Z"-shaped staircase climbing up the smooth wall. The far canyon wall can be seen in the background with a faint mountainside behind it.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
