Description
Photograph of San Francisco's Market Street near Fifth Street, ca.1905. There are two street cars on the right side of the road, both labeled "7 Haight". There is a median in the middle of the road, on which there is a large crowd of pedestrians. Commercial buildings line both sides of the street. There are many pedestrians on both sides of the street, and horse drawn carts parked on the right side. Legible signs include, from left to right, "Safe Deposit Open Nights", The Emporium California's La[rgest] America's [...]", "Masks Playbooks Wigs Makeup", "Simon Millinery Supply Co.", "Charles Brown & Sons", "Vulcan Barler", "Mrs. E. Lynch", "[...] Bros.", "Schwartz and Goodman", "Lincoln Block", and "Sh[...]".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
