Description

Photograph of a night view of a forest fire, ca.1920 (1930?). The trees and ground in the foreground are dark with their details shadowed by night while the trees and grass at center glow with fire. Most of the standing trees appear to be stripped of leaves or branches, but several short, pine trees appear to be in tact. Many larger trees have fallen and lie on the ground deteriorating in the flames.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
