Description

Photograph of construction work on a house, ca.1930. A building with a flat roof and a bare façade sits in the center and extends from the foreground to the background. What seems to be a large entryway sits to the right of center with a ladder and a man on the right side of the doorway. To the left, four large windows that glisten in the sun are lined up in the center of the walls. A long ladder that reaches the roof leans against the building the left while a small ladder stabilizes itself next to a window in the center. A man bends over to the right of the ladder while a truck can be seen parked on the right with piles of dirt and construction refuse in front of the building.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
