Description

Photograph of the construction of sidewalks, ca.1930. A layer of mesh wire lays on top of the group with wooden walls of support surrounding it to form a rectangle in the center. On the right, a man stands wearing overalls with a hammer hanging off his side. The man holds one end of a fence while a man to the left of center holds the other end of the same fence. In the background, three men bend over as they shovel dirt away from the construction. To the left, a sixth man stands holding a shovel. Bare trees line the construction sight as well as the street in the background.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
