Description
Photograph of a view of State Street in Santa Barbara showing the Diehl Grocery Co., California, ca.1905. Both horse-drawn carriages and automobiles navigage the unpaved street in which streetcar tracks are embedded. Three-story commercial buildings with decorative molding line the street to the left, along with the utility poles that are spaced evenly along the sidewalk. Signs on the building in the extreme left foreground read "Diehl Grocery Co.", "Trenwite, Dry Goods", and "The Great Wardrobe". The next building in along the left side identifies itself with the sign in its window as the "First National Bank". Further down, a third sign reads "Dr. Wilson. Physician-Surgeon [...] Eye, Ear, Nose-Throat" and a sign still further down reads simply "Views". A boy in short pants stands in the street in the foreground watching the traffic. The spire of a church is visible in the distance.
