Description
Photograph of building constructed for Midwinter International Exposition, San Francisco, 1894. The museum is shown in Golden Gate Park and was originally constructed for the Midwinter International Exposition. It was the ancestor of the present De Young Museum. In the foreground at center, a paved path can be seen curving to the left. To the right of the path, small shrubs can Joshua trees can be seen. To the right of the path, a series of small columns connected by thick chains is visible. At the center of the path, a small girl wearing a lightly colored dress can be seen holding hands with another child wearing darker clothing. In the background, two large flagpoles flank the rectangular building. Steps can be seen leading to the structure, and a small statue of a sphinx is visible to the left of the stairs. A series of decorative columns are visible beside the entrance of the museum. Atop the structure, a small pyramid is visible.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
