Description
Photograph of a group of six Hopi Indian children sitting on a burro in the village of Shonguapavi, ca.1901. A Hopi Indian man is steadying the burro by its neck. The burro is facing right. An adobe dwelling is visible behind them. This burro has no visible ears -- the result of clipping a piece of its ears -- the method of punishment inflicted each time the burro was caught breaking into someone's corn patch.
