Description
Photograph (high angle) of the Methodist Episcopal Church on the corner of 8th Street and Hope Street, showing surrounding area, April 1927. A tall tower with a cross atop it and several pointed spires stands at center, and a similar tower is visible in the extreme background at left. A sidewalk runs along both sides of the structure, and several automobiles can be seen parked beneath the street lamps. Two roads intersect in the foreground, while several buildings can be seen in the background. In the extreme foreground at right, a small tailor's shop is visible.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
