Photograph of several people pulling onions from the seed bed and preparing them for planting in the onion field, Petit Ranch, San Fernando Valley, near Van Nuys, February 3, 1930. A group of people can be seen kneeling by rows of onions. A man in the left foreground is visible pulling some from the ground, while a woman behind him winds something in her hands. Several other people mill around the area, including a man in a dark hat at center who sits beside a box of onions at left, and a small child at right. In the distance, several other people can be seen walking around the field, engaging in different activities. A row of tall trees stands by a roofed structure in the center background, and mountains can be seen in the distance.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
