PROGRAM NOTES

Charity Suffereth Long was composed in loving memory of my Grandfather, Yim Chun
Fai, who passed away in August 2015. Faith, hope, and charity are the biggest lessons
I have learned from knowing this great man. The Corinthian canticle may segue to
Maurice Duruflé’s Ubi Caritas, which translates to “Where Charity and Love Prevail.”
The two sacred texts enhance one another with the common themes of love and
charity. Both inspired by Gregorian chants, Charity Suffereth Long is also reminiscent
of Renaissance motets as well as Romantic Russian choral music. The modal
inflections present struggles between bittersweet memories of lost loved ones.
Instead of dwelling on the grief of loss, however, the music occasionally shines light,
eventually leading to the gratifying and serene Ubi Caritas.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is
not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked,
thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there
be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish
away.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
