Hands  Reaching  for  the  Radio       Montage  of  Vegas  Shots       Upbeat  song  playing  in  the  background.         Songs  picks  up  pace     Shots  of  Flashing  Lights     Shots  of  Ruby  coming  out  of  her  room   and  walking  down  the  hallway         Announcer:  She’s  got  a  huge  fanbase   out  there.     Shots  of  Ruby  walking  on  stage  posing       She  is  from  Palmdale  California;  she   is  an  amazing  65  years  of  age!     Ruby  on  camera     Ruby  Carter  Pikes:  The  key  is  to  look   like  your  having  fun.  I  mean  I  do.  I   really  do.  I  don’t  know  how  well  I’m   going  to  do  this  show  ,  but  I  have  fun   it  makes  me  feel  good  .  I  just  feel  good   for  me  and  the  people.  I  like  going  on   stage  because  I’m  just  saying…I’m  65   and  you  can  do  it  to.  I’m  alive,  I’m  not   on  a  stick,  I  could  be  but  I’m  not   today.  Just  look  at  me,  and  all  because     I  took  pride  and  took  time  to  take   care  of  me.     Outside  shot  of  Palmdale  Fitness   Shot  of  her  working  out   Sounds  of  workout  machine     4   Shots  of  Ruby  running         Ruby  On  Camera   Ruby  Carter  Pikes:  I  did  1700  calories   last  night,  I  mean,  and  you  know  one   of  the  girls  say,  are  you  going  to  stop?   But  I  don’t  know  once  I  start  going  its   like  an  engine.  Once  I  start  going  I’m   good.  I  feel  good.  And  I  know  how  to   breathe  and  I  know  how  to  take  my   stride.  I  know  how  to  slow  it  down   and  pick  it  up,  like  that  second    wind.   And  I  just  kept  going  and  it  felt  good.     Shots  of  Ruby  lifting  30lbs  weighs       Husband  on  Camera     Al  Carter  Pikes     Husband:     The  only  time  she  intimates  me  is   when  she  attempts  to  train  me.   (laughs)  So  I’ll  be  doing  my  workout   which  is  nothing  compared  to  hers   but  she  always  feels  the  need  to  show   me  something  or  correct  me  or   something  and  we  joke  about  it,  but  I   tell  her  look,  I’m  not  one  of  your   clients.       Demetri-‐On  Camera     Demetrius  Orlando  Carter,  Son:     Intimidating…It’s  more  like   competitive.  Like  now,  I  know  she  can   outrun  me.     Ruby  working  on  her  legs  at  the  gym     Ruby:  The  Body  is  something,  you   have  to  eat  right,  get  the  right   nutrients  you  need.  You  have  to   hydrate  it,  get  plenty  of  water,  you   have  to  get  up  and  move  and  exercise.     Ruby  explaining  how  much  weight  she   is  lifting.  We  see  her  about  to  work  out.     Ruby:  We’ve  got  45,  two  45s  on  each   side,  which  is  90  on  each  side,  which   makes  it  180,  probably  more  than   that  with  the  bar.     Ruby  doing  leg  lifts     Ruby:  You  have  to  give  it  a  rest.  All   four  of  those  things,  you  have  to  do  it   all.  You  can’t  do  one  without  the   other.       5   Shot  of  the  Outside  of  Custom   Swimwear  sign       We  see  shots  of  the  bathing  suits   Ruby:  So  you  can  tell  me  a  little  bit   about  these  suits.       Carriann  Love:  Alright  Ruby  I  got  5   different  suits  for  you  to  try  on,  you   can  try  any  of  them  on,  they  are  all   your  standard  figure  posing  suits   according  to  guidelines  all  adorned   with  swobski  crystals  .       On  Camera       Cariann  Love:  Our  Store  is  mainly  for   swimsuits  ,  but  based  in  the  fact  that   there  aren’t  too  many  companies  that   make  custom  posing  suits  for   bodybuilders  and  figure  competitors.   We  do  get  most  of  the  competitors  in   Southern  California.         Ruby  looking  at  herself  in  a  swimsuit  on   camera.       Ruby:  I  just  try  to  make  sure   everything  is  in  proportion  and   proper,  your  suit  has  to  fit  proper.       On  Camera         We  see  Ruby’s  toned  back  and  prancing   in  front  of  the  mirror       Cariann  Love:  We  do  get  a  lot  of   people,  I’d  say  several  hundred  per   year,  customers  that  compete— including  Ruby  who  has  been  coming   in  for  years.    We  love  working  with   her  and  she  always  comes  in  and  get   something.  Usually  the  suits  fit  her   right  off  the  rack  because  her   physique  is  always  the  same.    She’s   always  in  peak  shape.     Packaging  Ruby’s  items  for  check  out     Carianne  Love:  Competitors  doing   their  first  show,  that’s  maybe  in  a   smaller  city  or  smaller  sanction.  They   are  usually  going  to  spent  about  250   dollars  a  suit.  Customers  who  do  the   pro  levels  shows  like  the  Olympia   and  the  pro  levels  classics  and  those     6   type  of  things.  Those  suits  can  go  up   to  1400  dollars.       Carianne:  Let  us  know  what  is  going   out  with  ya?     Ruby:  Ok  I  will.  Goodbye.       Picture  of  her  sister  on  camera       Ruby:  My  sister,  died  last  year  2011,   September  21 st .  My  sister  was  two   years  younger  than  me.  She  ended  up   having  diabetes  and  that’s  the  thing   that  runs  in  my  family.       Shot  of  Ruby  in  Kitchen  cooking  a  meal             Ruby  on  Camera       Ruby:  My  sister  continued  on  her   path,  she  ended  up  losing  a  leg,  she   ended  up...they    amputated  her  leg.         Ruby:  To  me  its  pointless,  its  crazy,   when  a  person  know  that  you  already   have  health  issues,  and  you  know   what  those  are,  you  know  how  to   prevent  it,  and  you  still  continue  She   killed    herself.     Ruby  putting  food  in  pot             Anne  Peters  on  Camera               Ruby  putting  food  in  oven,  then  son  on   camera.     Anne  Peters:  Rates  of  Type  II   Diabetes  is  very  high  in  the  African   American  Community.  One  of  the   highest  communities  in  terms  of   rates  of  type  II  diabetes.       The  Type  II  Diabetes  is  first  of  all   always  genetic    almost  everybody  has   a  family  history  of  it,  or  a  family   history  of  heart  disease  that  is  sort  of   a  type  II  diabetes  equivalent,.       Demetrius:  I’m  a  diabetic  now,  so   now  its  not  just  eating  what  is  on  the   table.  Now  its  more  or  less  for  my   saftey       7   Family  eating  at  the  dinner  table             On  Camera   Anne  Peters:  They  think  by  2050  that   30  percent  of  all  people  will  have   type  II  diabetes  and  if  your  African   Americans,  Latinos,  or  Asian,  50   percent  or  half  of  all  people  will  have   diabetes.  That’s  huge.       Demetrius:  So  healthy  eating  is  very   important  in  my  life  now.  Its  not  all   fun  and  games  or  cupcakes  and   twinkes  all  over  the  place.    I  have  to   stay  away  from  the  sweets  so  this  is   something  I’m  starting  to  learn  as  a   grown  man.         Ruby  with  her  family  eating  dinner     Ruby:  If  somebody  tells  me  today  that   something  I’m  doing  is  causing  my   health..then  I’m  going  to  stop  it.  I  may   not  be  able  to  cure  myself,  but  I  can   either    slow  the  process  of  I  can  speed   it  up.       Shots  of  Ruby  Driving  to  Vegas     Shots  of  Sign  Saying  Las  Vegas  80  miles     Ruby:  I  mean  I’m  going  to  a  body   building  show  now  and  it  is  a  sport   and  its  fun  but  I  look  at  it  as  more   than  that  ..I  do…  I  really  do..  I  look  at   it  as  more  than  just  me  competing.  I   mean,  I’m  putting  my  life  on  display   and  its  like  just  like,  when  a  new   product  hits  the  market  you  see  tv,   billboard,  magazines,  everybody   flashing  cuz  they  want  everybody  to   have  a  part  of  it.    Ok  then  I’m  that   billboard.  That’s  what  I  want  to  do.  I   want  people  to  be  a  part  of  me,  at   least  how  I  live  my  life.  It  can  make   some  kind  of  impact  on  them.         Larry  Camacho   On  Camera-‐Assistant         Larry:  Muscle  mania  is  a  competition   about  natural  body  builders…total   drug  free  body  builders,  and  this  is   our  23 rd  anniversary  and  we  have   been  here  the  last  four  years  at  the   golden  nugget  in  Vegas  and  this  is  our   annual  contest,  we  have  figure,     8   fitness,  model  and  body  building.   Montage  of  Ruby  getting  Ready  makeup,   tanning  cut  to  music       Shot  of  Ruby  coaching  guys       Ruby:  Whatever  you  do  smile!  Not  no   crazy  smile,  but  you  smile.    You  know   kind  of  sexy  a  little  bit.    Walk  out   there  with  confidence.           Aaron  Zambran   Emcee,  Fitness  America  On  Camera     Aaron:  it’s  just  the  best  of  the  best   from  all  over  the  world.  Some  of  the   best  natural  athletes  I’ve  ever  seen.       Shot  of  Ruby  on  Stage           Peter  Hardwick—On  camera   International  Bodybuilding  Judge       Peter:  It’s  great,  back  home  in  New   Zealand,  our  last  show.  The  largest   class  of  women  was  the  physic   women  over  50  years  old.  They  are  in   great  shape,  the  baby  boomers  are   really  coming  through  and  we  are   getting  more  and  more  of  the  older   more  mature  people  who  have  got   time  on  their  hands  and  they  want  to   keep  in  shape.     Ruby  on  stage     Husband  on  camera     Al  Carter  Pikes   It’s  like  wow,  that’s  my  wife  up  there   and  she  is  competing  against  all  these   women  and  some  of  them  are  like   half  of  her  age,  and  she  is  holding  her   own  and  looking  good.       9   Shot  of  Ruby  before  they  announce  the   winners   Announcer:  Alright,  In  third  place  we   have  competitor  297  Ruby  Carter   Pikes……   Shot  of  Ruby  on  Stage       Shot  of  Ruby  on  Camera  talking         Shot  or  Ruby  posing  on  stage  with  her   flowers  and  trophy             Ruby:  It  felt  good,  it  really  did,  and  I   was  up  with  people  much  younger,  I   think  I  was  the  oldest  thing  up  there.   But  just  going  up  there  with  other   women  its  not  so  much  of  age  but  just   the  condition  your  body  was  in,  and  I   knew  my  body  was  in  pretty  fair   condition,  and  competing  against   women  that  was  a  lot  tighter  than  me,   it  was  ok.    I  felt  real  good.  Being  in   third  place.  It’s  ok,  when  they  say  5 th ,   I  was  in  the  top  five  that  was  nice,   they  call  out  five  pass  me,  4 th ,  3 rd ,   pretty  damn  good,  it  felt  good,  it  felt   real  good.       Shots  of  Ruby  and  people  taking   pictures       Aaron:  It  is  not  about  a  trophy  or   apiece  of  glass  that  says  figure   American  championship,  its  about   the  journey,  its  about  being  able  to   jump  on  stage  and    say  I  presented   my  best  body  and  at  the    end  of  the   day.  You  look  at  just  money  versus   trophy  its  not  really  worth  it,  its  not   worth  it  at  all,  but  you  cant  put  a   value  on  that  time  or  experience  on   the  journey  itself.  And  it’s  invaluable   to  be  honest  with  you  and  so  these   competitors  do  it  because  it’s   something  money  cannot  buy,  its   inner  happiness,  inner  peace,  it  is   inner  strength.    that  just  goes  beyond   the  stage.     Shot  of    scene  place  where  Ruby  is  going   to  run.       Son  On  Camera     Demetrius  Orlando  Carter,  Son:     Like  they  say  your  body  is  a  temple,   and  you  are  what  you  eat  and  that  is   what  I  believe  you  would  say.       10   On  Camera             Shot  of  Ruby  looking  out  into  the   distance                 On  Camera     Anne:  So  what  is  absolutely  great  is   the  stories  I  have  of  people  who  have   learned  how  to  prevent  diabetes,  who   have  taken  it  to  heart  and  who  have   fought  diabetes  in  a  very  proactive   way.  This  isn’t  a  dieses  that  one  has   to  be  a  victim  of.  There  are  all  sorts  of   horrible  dieses,  horrible  cancers  all   sorts  of  things  that  I  cant  fix  but  I   know  with  the  right  motivated   patient,  I  can  prevent  anything  that   happens  from  diabetes.       Al:  Especially  at  her  age,  the  shape   that  she  is  in.  I  think  its  fantastic.  And   Oh  God  I  wish  I  had  her  stamina  and   energy  to  do  things  like  that.         Closing  shot  of  Ruby  running  off       Ruby:  And  Anybody  can  do  this   ..anybody  all  you  have  to  is  just  take   your  time..I  don’t  have  time,  you   mean  to  tell  me  you  don’t  have  time   to  take  care  of  you!  I’m  special,  I  only   have  but  one  life,  you  only  have  but   one  life,  one  time  to  do  it..try  to  do  it   right.  That’s  the  way  I  feel  about  it.         Roll  those  credits!!!
