Description
Photograph of priests marching to the kisi in the Hopi Snake Dance Ceremony, Oraibi, Arizona, ca.1898. The dancers have long hair and can be seen wearing armbands and necklaces. Their upper torsos are naked, and they can be seen wearing short patterned skirts and moccasins and long furry animal tails. They can be seen walking in a single-file line at center towards the bottom left and are on their way to the kiva or kisi. About five other men can be seen from behind standing next to one another at right. They wear long furry animal tails and have lines painted on their bare backs. Numerous onlookers are spectating from atop the pueblo in the background as well as on the ground. Two women shade themselves with black umbrellas.
