Description
Photograph of four people before a pasageway into the central courtyard at Mission San Juan Capistrano, California, ca.1908. Pictured are (left to right): David Velasquez (standing with his left hand on the shoulder of Martinez), Celestio Martinez (sitting on a bench reading a book), Meza (the Indian mestizo, sitting on the ground), Geronimo Ruiz (the Indian santero, or saint carver, sitting on a bench reading a book). Stucco has fallen from the corners of the arched passageway revealing the adobe brick construction underneath.; The Indian santero, Meza, was the one who carved and repaired the wooden statues of the saints at the Mission of San Luis Rey, having the office handed down to him from early "neofito" ancestors. Geronimo Ruiz e Ybarra was the son of Don Natividad Ruiz and grandson of the wealthy Son Mariano Ruiz of Los Angeles (a veteran of the California war of 1846-1847, whose ancient adobe stood on the river bank in east Los Angeles. -- according to A. Yorba.
