Description
Photographic portrait of Sherman Otis Houghton (S.O. Haughton), ca.1890-1900. He is visible from the chest up turned three-quarters to the left. He can be seen wearing a light-colored shirt with a dark bow tie, vest, and jacket. He is bald on top but with medium-length hair at sides and in back. He has a full beard and moustache. He lived from 1828 to 1914.; Born in New York City, N.Y., April 10, 1828, he was a republican. He was Mayor of San Jose, California, 1855; U.S. Representative from California, 1871-75 (1st District 1871-73, 4th District 1873-75). He died in Compton, Los Angeles County, California, August 31, 1914.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
