Description
Photograph of bookshelves in the library of Mission San Juan Capistrano, California, ca.1890. Books sit (some upright, some flat) on eleven shelves of the wooden bookcase which is in a state of disrepair. A wave-shaped wooden decoration forms part of the lower part of the bookcase. A large book sits upright partially splayed open on the wooden floor leaning against a lower shelf. The plaster wall behind the bookcase is cracked. Many titles are legible on the spines of the old well-used books including: "Vallens juris canonici", "Parras regulare de lndias, 2", "Cuniliati theologiae moralis, 1", "Cuniliati theologiae moralis, 2", "Dictionaire historique I", .... The mission was built in the late 18th century.; "Ancient mission library still intact in upstairs room over Padre Mut's living quarters in 1880. The inventory taken in 1834 on the secularization of this ex-mission listed 209 volumes all of which were still present when this photograph was taken. The library was since looted and only a few books remain." -- unknown author.
