Description
Photograph of the adobe ruins of Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo (Mission Carmel), ca.1870. The façade of the mission is at right and is still largely intact. It has a tall bell tower topped by a dome on its left side. The rest of the mission behind the façade is in worse condition--the walls at extreme left are crumbling. The wooden roof that still covers part of the mission is full of holes and the spackle that originally covered the adobe bricks on the walls is gone. There is a line of trees in the background at right.
