Description
Photograph of a portrait painting of Asher Hamburger, [s.d.]. Mr. Hamburger is seated in a chair at center and is looking at the camera, although his body is turned slightly to the right. He is wearing a black suit and matching vest, as well as a white shirt and black bowtie. He is balding, and his remaining hair is white. The frame around the painting is visible and is decorated with intricate carvings. Hamburger was the founder of the People's Store in Phillips Block #1, High Street (later Ord Street) and New High Street. It was later the Hamburger Department Store, and later May Company. Asher's children established the Hamburger Home for Girls on the 1300 Block of South Union Avenue in 1935. It was later moved to Hollywood Boulevard west of La Brea Avenue in about 1958.
