Description

Photograph of a view of Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, [s.d.]. The beach is crowded with bathers and their umbrellas. People can be seen sitting, walking, and laying down in the sand. Most of them are under the shade provided by their umbrellas. There is a lifeguard tower at right and a line of tall buildings at left. The ocean is at right and a pier is visible in the background. Several rides are visible on the pier, including two rollercoasters, a slide and a funhouse. Legible signs include, from left to right, "Denver Hotel", "Umbrellas", "Chick Inn Fried Chicken on Toast to take out", "Free Trip", "Curry's Hosack", "Drugs Soda Lunch", "Fashion Shop", and "Funhouse".

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
