Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Mission San Diego Alcala, ca.1888-1892. The mission is shown in disrepair with its chapel at center. A shingled overhang extends from the center of the two-story adobe chapel, whose left wall has lost most of its spackle, showing most of its bricks, which appear to be collapsing. To the right, the one-story monks' quarters have been stripped almost entirely of their spackle, extending from a slightly taller, roofed building. The crumbling brick wall of what may be the back half of the chapel is visible, completely separate from the separated front half. Scrub grass fills the dusty ground in front of the mission, while mountains may be seen in the right background.
