Description

Photographic portrait of Mrs. Jotham Bixby, Long Beach, [s.d.]. The bust of Mrs. Bixby is framed by an oval. She wears a chain brooch, earrings, choker, and a dress with lace trim. Her face, in three-quarters profile, seems smooth and relatively young. Her hair is parted down the center and pulled back into a loose, decorative braid. The stamp at the right of the photo reads "[...] Rolofson, S.F." Her husband, Jotham Bixby was the founding president of the Bixby Land Company which was valued at $775,000--a considerable sum at the time, although the company by that time had also incurred $426,000 against it. Jotham remained president until the died in 1917. Photoprint reads: "Margaret Hathaway".

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
