Description
Photographic portrait of soldiers, bandsmen and civilians posing in front of the Mission San Carlos for the exhuming of Friar Junipero Serra's remains, Monterey, July 3, 1882. Twenty-seven riflemen stand in a rank with their rifles held by their feet, two captains with swords in similar positions standing in front of them. A rank of marching band members is situated behind them, behind which a crowd of civilians stands. The entrance to the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmel stands two stories tall behind them, its bell tower connected to the left, a rose window situated above the arched doorway. The bulk of the adobe building can be seen to the left, without spackle and apparently in disrepair. What appears to be an cemetery stands enclosed by fence to the right.
