Description

Photograph of a view of West Street in Healdsburg, ca.1900. A wide dirt road is visible running from bottom towards the background to the left. Two-story buildings and storefronts are visible on both sides of the street. To the left, a sign is visible hanging from the overhanging porch reading, "J. Silberstein". Further down the sidewalk, a sign reading, "Racket Tea Store" is visible. On the top story of a building on the right a sign reading, "1895 C. Muller" is visible. To the right of center, a sign reading, "Electric Boot and Shoe Repairing While You Wait J.W. Bolton and Son" is visible, while a sign in the window reads, "Post Office". Horse-drawn wagons and people are visible on the street towards the background.

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
