Photograph of a view of the Chollar mine dump in Gold Hill, Nevada, ca.1900. A mine in a dark suit and hat stands behind a bush on the right with mining tracks just next to him. Behind him there is a large dirt hill on the left with an elaborate wooden structure that stands on skeletal wooden pillars from the top of the hill to the bottom, where a smaller wooden structure sits. A man can be seen walking along the steep section of the structure while a field and mountain range sit in the distance.; Picture file card reads "The dump of the Chollar mine that produced millions. Discovered in 1859 by Billy Chollar -- it became one of the Great Six producers of Gold Hill".

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
