Description

Photograph of a bird's eye view of Redding, [s.d.]. Two men in dark suits and hats sit along the edge of a stone basin in the foreground on the left. The basin sits on a paved pathway that divides the grass yard behind it which is spotted with short palm trees. Trees shade the fronts of houses that stand behind short, lightly-colored fences across the street. The roofs of building can be seen among tree tops behind them with a distant view of the front of large buildings in the background on the left. A tall, lightly-colored building stands across an intersecting street on the right with Carnegie Library and the Hotel Lorenze further down the street.

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
