Description
Photograph of exterior views of Mission Padua from the inner courtyard, ca.1890. The image is a composite of three photographs and the area between them at center is decorated with a drawing of a cross. The image at left shows a long adobe structure with a crumbling terracotta tile roof. There are several bushes in the foreground and a cross on a hill behind the building. Below this image at center is an image of a building with a peaked roof and a cross on top. It is also adobe and there is a tree in the foreground. The final image is in the upper right corner and shows a small adobe building with a doorway at left and plants growing up the side at right. It has a terracotta tile roof. Another building is visible in the background and a window with an arched top is cut into the adobe wall.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
