Description
Photograph of an invitation to the funeral for Henry Mellus, mayor of Los Angeles, 1860. The letter is written mostly in script and there is a line drawing of a Greek pot in the upper left corner. The text of the letter reads as follows: "The funeral of the Hon. Henry Mellus, Mayor of this city, will take place on Friday the 28th instant. The procession will leave his residence for the Parish Church and cemetery at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Your attendance is solicited. Mrs. M. A. Mellus Francis Mellus James H. Lander Los Angeles, Dec. 27, 1860".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
