Description

Photograph of people standing at the entrance of the Municipal Campground in Elysian Park, ca.1900. Below the center, a group of people can be seen standing next to a gate in the left and a small cabin, with a window and a counter facing the viewer, in the right. There are signs on the gate which read: "GATES OPEN AT 6AM GATES CLOSED AT 11PM", "CAMPERS WILL SEE ATTENDANT FOR SPACE", and "[...] CAMP [...] GATE [?] TO [?]ANT".; Additional signs are visible by the small cabin which read: "OFFICE", "STLP(?) OFFICE", and "'STOP' SEE ATTENDANT FOR SPACE BEFORE ENTERING [?]TE". Behind the people, there are tents, parked cars and picnic areas, as well as, cabins located in the background. Tall trees surround the site and a hillside fills in the backdrop.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
