Description
Photograp of Dr. Luther Burbank and George Wharton James seated on the porch of Burbank's house in Santa Rosa, CA, ca.1906-1923. Dr. Luther Burbank can be seen at left wearing a three-piece suit and hat. His hands are clasped on his lap, while his left leg is tucked under his right. He is looking at George Wharton James, who is seated at right. James can be seen wearing a three-piece suit and tie, as well as a hat. He has a long beard and mustache, and holds a pair of glasses in his hands in his lap. His legs are crossed at the ankles. The men can be seen seated between two wooden pillars, while what appears to be a door can be seen in the background. James was originally misidentified as Professor Davies.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
