Description

Photograph of an aerial view of Hughes Aircraft Manufacturing Plant, ca.1950. Above the center, a series of large buildings in which the roof of the largest one is labeled "HUGHES".; These are surrounded by a parking lot full of parked automobiles. Additional buildings can be seen in the center and in the right foreground. In the left, adjacent to the plant, a vast airplane runway is observable where a few airplanes are either visible by the runway or parked next to one of the buildings.; A second parking lot area is visible in the left foreground. A paved street can be noticeable, to the right, along the site where further to the right, on a more elevated ground, a church and a residential area is observable. More residential areas cover the area further in the right and left background, to the left of the airplane runway.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
